Which of these two girls names do you like best?

1. Nora

2. Greta

I really like old fashioned names that are not too trendy yet not too crazy. Any ideas if you don't care for either of these?

thanks!

Which of these two girls names do you like best?
Nora. It's my grandma's name. I love that it's very old-fashioned. I don't like Greta as much, it makes me think of Hansel and Gretel.
Reply:Personally I think Nora is better, but I also think that it should go along with the rest of her name. Maybe Nora Lynn? Greta Lynn?

you may already know this..but just in case...

Nora is a classic Irish name, it could be a shortened form of Eleanor meaning "torch" or could be from the Latin Honora meaning "honor, reputation" and became so popular in Ireland in the Middle Ages that many people assumed it was Irish. Noreen is the diminutive of Nora and means "little honourable one."

Greta is a short form of Margarethe (a pearl).

Lynn is a transferred use of a British place-name derived from the Welsh llyn (lake, waterfall). It is also thought to have originated as a short form of Lynnette, a name of several derivations, or of Linda (beautiful, tender). Alternatively,Lynn is a short form of the various names containing the element lyn or line.

So her name could be beautiful pearl, or beautiful little honorable one. Either one sounds lovely.
Reply:I like them both. Classic, yet not too popular.

Choosing which one is "better" would depend on what the last name would be.

Since "Greta" is very German sounding, if you have a last name that is another very distinct ethnicity, then the more neutral-sounding "Nora" might be better. Example: "Greta McNeil" doesn't sound as good as "Nora McNeil." But if your last name is either German sounding (or perhaps Dutch or Scandinavian), or if the last name sounds kind of "ethnic neutral," then Greta might sound better.

EDIT: I'm not sure why people are suggesting Abigail, Elizabeth, and Madeline, considering you specifically said in your opening post you didn't want anything that was too popular/trendy.
Reply:nora, that was one of our top names that we were considering.

we were considering ... nora clare or nora violet ( i liked another name that i really didn't want to give up so we compromised and decided to use both middle names, violet marin)
Reply:Sorry - don't care for either. How about Noa (after the singer)? Can't think of something similar to Greta that sounds pretty. But if you like old fashioned names, my daughter is Eliza and everyone thinks it's old fashioned and love it.
Reply:They are both old fashioned and nice. I really like Nora. It is simple and elegant, and very pretty. Go for it!! :o) Another old fashioned name that is simple and pretty like that is Ruby. Hope that helps! Take care!
