Girls' names . . . . ?

Why does it seem like with girls, you can tell their age by their names? For example, someone named Doris, is probably in her 50s and a girl named Britney is probably a tweener....... But for guys, most names are timeless like Thomas, James, Edward, etc.

Girls' names . . . . ?
Old sounding names like Sophie or Herbert pop up every couple years.

Girl babies get stuck with trendy names just a little more often than boy babies do. For the last 30 years, I've seen more gender neutral names like Dylan. We know that it is because some celebrity becomes well known or literature promotes a name.

Names that are unattractive to me are precious to some young mother. Someone is naming their daughter, Matilda, Olivia or Gertrude and their son, Irving, Wilbur or Stanley, right now.

What, I wonder, makes a name universally appealing?

Adam, Brian, Christopher, Daniel, Edward, etc.

Anne, Barbara, Carolyn, Diane, Emma, etc.

So many of them are very old names, indeed.

C. :)
Reply:Yes. My name is Charlene. I kind of wish it was Charlize. A lot more trendy. Report Abuse

Reply:because girls are supposed to be trendy. boys are not.
Reply:Emma
Reply:culture and name popularity...names are trends as well

cool fact no one had ever had the name Wendy until after peter pan was published.
Reply:There are some mens' names that are that way also - Harold, Harry, Stanley, Grover, etc.
Reply:totally, when is the last time you met someone named:

Roberta, Gertude, Burnette, Lois, Emilia, Rose, or Joanne

These are all older women I know in a small TX town.
Reply:don't know...
Reply:As others have pointed out, this simply is not the case anymore. Try to find a lot of younger males with the names of Henry, Frank, Herman, and Ernest. Try to find some older men with names like Braeden, Caden, Carter, Logan, etc...
Reply:yah i Kinda agree with u. Like Margret it sound likes a 60's year old women. totally agree with u
Reply:I feel sorry for that generation of people that ot stuck with names like Britney, Courtney, Brandon, and Dylan.
Reply:Gurl names have their trend.

Every ten years there ise a new stylish baby name.

:P

My name is extremely unique.

no one has it cuz my uncle made it up by kombining 2 names!

awsome..jaja
Reply:Actually, that isn't as true now a days. Yes, you can often tell a woman's age by her name, but its also becoming a popular trend with men, too. Think of the male names Trent, Jamie, Brett, Bradyon, Hayden, Jayden etc. Of course there are the foundations that will never change (John, Mark, Peter, Michael, etc) but women have that too (Linda, Mary, Carol, Lisa, etc). It has been popular for both genders now to give new and trendy names. Males are no longer immune to it.
Reply:I have a friend my age- I'm early 30's- whose name is Delorus!!! It's horrid. She doesn't suit it, she's a gorgeous muscly blonde model and body builder and it makes me think of some big lady from the 1930's. She hates it and calls herself "Cheetah" which is almost just as bad. I have a friend in her 20's called Gwen or Gwendolyn, an it's yucky for her. Maybe in Hollywood for Gwen Stefanie it works, but she doesn't suit it as she's a Hip Hop, Bepop Dancer and we call her Penguin instead.

Males names aren't all timeless like you said. Am I gonna call my kid: "Keith, Boris, Frederick, Henry"- probably not, I would feel like my baby is actually a 65 year old man.
Reply:girls are about trends...fashion, pets, clothes, and kids names..when they get preggy they think of a trendy name..
Reply:Popular names go on cycles of popularity, a good example is the name Emma, its extremely popular now and was very popular when my daughter's (who is named Emma) great-grandmother (who is also named Emma) was born. part of this reason comes from people naming their kids after old/dieing relatives and ancestors. Think of names in some traditions, like Marie (Mary, Maria), that have been popular since Christianity was introduced to Europe...
Reply:That's not completely true. Back in the 50's, you would be hard-pressed to find a guy with a name like Chase or Braeden.
Reply:Actually, you can sort of tell the ages of men by their names but it is not as clear cut as it is withn women. When I was a child, names like Mark, Scott, William, and John were popular. I never heard of boys with names like Cody, Austin, Brandon, and Dylan. While you may not be able to pin them down to specific decades like you can with women, you can guess that they came from a particular generation.
Reply:Girls names and boys names are completely timeless.

Take the name James for instance; how many times do we see it paired up with a trendy name; oh let's say Riley, as in Riley James or James Andrew. Then you have the same Sarah, which is another name paired with a trendy name; oh as in Emily Sarah or Sarah Danielle. Names never go out of style except for Ethel, Mildred and Doris.
